Supreme President Attends Cyprus Children’s Fund Gala
Supreme President Andrew C. Zachariades attended the Cyprus Children’s Fund Annual Gala, March 5, where he provided remarks to an audience of 250 persons. The Cyprus Children’s Fund honored First Lady of the Republic of Cyprus Mrs. Andri Anastasiades and the Honorable Judge Harriet George. The Gala was held at the Boathouse, Central Park, New York City.

The act of honoring AHEPA family members with the AHEPA Medal for Military Service was acknowledged by the U.S. Senate as part of a concurrent resolution passed March 20, 2000, with the lead of then U.S. Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D-MD), on the occasion of the 2000 AHEPA Biennial Salute Banquet. The banquet’s theme was “Salute to Veterans.”

    US-Israel-Greece poised for annual maritime drill in Eastern Mediterranean
    Defense News (Mar. 7)
    The trilateral Noble Dina exercise between the American, Israeli and Hellenic navies will begin later this month, with nearly a dozen surface ships, submarines and related air assets scheduled to engage in joint reconnaissance, counter-terror and antisubmarine warfare training. Cyprus will participate as an observer in the annual three-way drill, which begins in Greece and will conclude in mid-April here at the Israeli Navy headquarters in Haifa, said Commander Assaf Boneh, the head of international cooperation for the Israeli sea service. read more
    US backs Greece’s efforts to build EU energy connections
    New Europe (Mar. 3)
    The United States strongly supports Greece’s efforts to build its energy connections with Europe, US Ambassador to Athens Geoffrey Pyatt told the Delphi Economic Forum on March 3.”Projects like TAP (the Trans Adriatic Pipeline), the Bulgaria-Greece-Interconnector (IGB), Revythousa (LNG terminal) and the proposed FSRU (Floating Storage Regasification Unit) near Alexandroupolis all help cement Greece’s critical role in transforming the energy security in southeast Europe and will help drive economic growth in the years ahead,” Pyatt said. read more
    Ambassador Pyatt praises responsible Greek response to ‘activity’ in Aegean
    ANA-MPA (Mar. 3)
    Commenting on recent heightened activity in the Aegean, U.S Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt on Fridayexpressed concern about the possibility of an “accident” while praising the Greek government’s responsible attitude at a time of heightened tension, in remarks at the Delphi Economic Forum. Regarding on the Cyprus issue, meanwhile, he said the new U.S. administration will continue its efforts for a solution. Turning to economic affairs and the role of the IMF, the ambassador said that he had not observed any change in the attitude of the new U.S. leadership, expressing U.S. support for growth in Greece. read more

    Eide expects new move in talks
    In Cyprus (Mar. 6)
    UN special envoy Espen Barth Eide expects the two Cyprus leaders to make new moves this week, as time for achieving a settlement is running out. After meeting with both leaders separately, President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, Eide told daily Politis in an interview that he is expecting to see them take steps this week aimed at diffusing the situation. read more
    Greeks in Ukraine: Living Near the Front Line

    There is a picture on the wall depicting a Trier, an Ancient Greek warship. There are about twenty people on the deck with Greek and Ukrainian flags flying above their heads. There is a woman on the ship’s bow. This was a present made by the team at the Federation of Greek Societies of Ukraine, the head of which is Oleksandra Protsenko. Greeks are the third largest nationality in the Donetsk region. They’ve established dozens of settlements which are now located on the boundary line. The Federation’s main building is located in Mariupol, in the Donetsk region, near where shootings are still taking place. read more
