AHEPA Mourns Passing of Hellenic Athletic Hall of Fame Member Petros Spanakos

The Athletic Department of the Order of AHEPA sadly notes the passing of Petros Spanakos on March 28, 2026 in Brooklyn, New York. Petros, born July 26, 1938, along with his twin brother Nikos, were jointly inducted into the AHEPA Hellenic Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989. 

Both brothers were amongst the top amateur bantamweights boxers in the Country, jointly wining a total of ten Golden Glove Championship. In 1959, Petros earned a Bronze Medal representing the United States in the Pan-American games, where he befriended another American boxer, the young Cassius Clay, later known as Muhammad Ali. Petros and his twin brother Niko were recently named in the National Herald as among the top 20 Greek-American athletes of all-time.

Petros and Nikos for many years also sponsored a Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Award through the AHEPA Athletic Department, in recognition of his years as a teacher and a substance abuse counselor in the New York Public school system.

Beside his beloved brother Nick, Petros leaves his wife Stratoniki, brother George, and children Michel Spanakos and Diana Boyar, Alexandra Spanakos Calle and Juan Calle, Anthony and Photini Spanakos, and other relatives. 

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, April 2, 2026 at 10am
