Earlier this spring, members of the Massachusetts George Demeter Unit of the National Association of Parliamentarians gathered at the Massachusetts State House to commemorate George Demeter Day and Parliamentary Law Month. The event featured the formal reading of gubernatorial proclamations recognizing both observances and highlighting the importance of parliamentary procedure in preserving orderly and democratic decision-making.
The ceremony also celebrated the remarkable legacy of George Demeter, a Greek-American legislator, attorney, educator, veteran, and nationally recognized parliamentarian. Demeter authored the influential Demeter’s Manual of Parliamentary Law and Procedure, served as the first Greek American elected to the Massachusetts Legislature, and helped organize the Order of AHEPA, later serving as its second Supreme President.
By honoring Demeter’s contributions and promoting awareness of parliamentary law, the event reinforced the enduring value of fair process, civic engagement, and leadership in public and organizational life.
