Immediate AHEPA Past Supreme President Savas Tsivicos testified on Capitol Hill this week. Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission in the US Congress offered an indictment of Turkey’s ongoing occupation of Cyprus. “Human Rights in Turkish-Occupied Cyprus: Erdogan’s Record and Its Implications for the Ankara NATO Summit,” shed light on the realities of the occupation and provided attendees with firsthand accounts of Turkish violations in northern Cyprus.
Congressman Chris Smith (Chairman) alongside Co-Chairman James McGovern and Representatives Gus Bilirakis, Brad Schneider, and Dina Titus were there. Ambassador Evangelos Savva of Cyprus was asked to offer opening remarks at the hearing. This was followed by testimonies from Dr. Michael Rubin, Director of Policy Analysis at the Middle East Forum (Past Ahepa Academy of Achievement Award winner) Savas Tsivicos, past Supreme President of AHEPA and Alternate President of PSEKA (International Coordinating Committee – Justice for Cyprus); and Sinan Ciddi, Director of the Turkey Program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD).
The hearing was attended by a capacity crowd and focused on the Human Rights violations occurring daily by Türkiye. Supreme President Kaitson echoed PSP Tsivicos’ statements and praised him for his attendance.
